Boozhoo, MGWA members from across our beautiful state. I’m Rebecca Higgins, your 2024 President. I hail from northwest Minnesota where the winds and winters are strong and the Red flows north. Living and travelling across the country throughout my career has always steered me back to Minnesota’s plenty in human and natural resources.
MGWA aims to bring us together as a professional community to educate one another and those who seek to be life-long students of Nature’s lessons. While we seek to learn, we’re reminded that lessons come with acceptance of new information and new ways, built from history’s examples and wisdom. Listening to folks speak of the early MGWA days more than 40 years ago, it seems one lesson has stayed constant. That lesson is how we’ve knit together generations of groundwater practitioners centered on bettering and sustaining our resources for the next Minnesotans.
Minnesotans’ connections with water are so deeply sewn into the fabric of our identity that we sprinkle it into every facet of life, from a near-obsession with the weather, to our license plates and state brand. It has a power over politics, equity and ethos. We see people delight in the joy it brings year-round and the fight over its access. Somewhere in the middle of those issues are the scientists educating not on what’s right and wrong but what is accurate. We find ourselves increasingly pressured to apply a keen eye to advanced technologies, policies and scientific integrity in advising decision-makers on where our water stands. May we strive to portray the state of water accurately to address and overcome the environmental strains ahead.
For MGWA, the year ahead holds incredible promise for us as an organization. I believe in setting ambitious goals and together, we get to build and sculpt an MGWA that looks to the future to meet the needs of current and incoming members. You’ll notice exciting changes and opportunities in 2024! I hope you’re ready to jump in to help us craft an MGWA vision and mission that honors our history, inspires the path ahead, and energizes membership growth.
