Tony Runkel is Chief Geologist of the Minnesota Geological Survey, and adjunct professor in the Department of Earth Sciences; both are units of the University of Minnesota. His research targets the properties of bedrock in Minnesota that control groundwater flow, especially the transport of contaminants. Recent emphasis has been on fractured rock hydrogeology. Tony grew up in southeastern Minnesota, and holds a B.A. in Geology from the University of Minnesota, an M.S. from the University of Montana, and a PhD. from the University of Texas at Austin.
Even after 30 years I remain passionate about improving the science that supports management of Minnesota’s groundwater resources. Sustaining this passion for so long would not have been possible without being part of a such a large and enthusiastic group of people similarly devoted to the goal of protecting the state’s groundwater. The Minnesota Ground Water Association is the cornerstone of this group, bringing together the science that has been my niche with the equally important public policy and outreach activities necessary to safely manage this important resource. In many respects we are the envy of neighboring states. I cannot think of a greater honor than the opportunity to serve the members of my favorite organization.
