A free well water screening clinic sponsored by MGWA and MNWOO was held in St. Charles, located in western Winona County, on February 2, 2023. Five MGWA member volunteers were present at the clinic to help process 119 water tests and talk to well owners about groundwater in general and their water quality. Well water was tested for nitrate and chloride with approximately 16% of the samples having nitrate levels at or above 10 mg/L. The focus of the clinic was on health issues caused by high nitrate levels, the importance of regular well monitoring and the options for treatment. A limited number of vouchers for testing nitrate and bacteria from a state-certified laboratory were given out to well owners whose screening results indicated susceptibility to contamination.
An article about the water clinic was published in the Rochester Post Bulletin on February 3, 2023. Well water testing clinic in St. Charles highlights nitrates as a public health issue – Post Bulletin | Rochester Minnesota news, weather, sports
