Eryn Bloom is a third-year undergraduate at St. Cloud State University,
double majoring in Hydrology and Earth Sciences. As a Midwest native,
Eryn’s lifelong connection to the region’s rivers-from childhood
adventures on the Sauk and Mississippi in her hometown in Minnesota to
witnessing the destructive power of floods in Illinois and North
Dakota-has deeply influenced her academic focus and career aspirations.
At university, Eryn’s coursework spans groundwater dynamics to geologic
field work, enriching her understanding of water’s complex roles in
ecosystems and communities. Beyond the classroom, she’s expanding her
expertise through pursuing certifications in Horticulture and
Ornithology. Additionally, Eryn has undertaken various projects, such as
coordinating a citizen science-based evaporation pan and a self-study in
Geoethics.
Eryn aspires to blend ecology with the physical sciences to innovate
flood mitigation, aiming to balance human and ecological needs. She sees
this award as pivotal, enabling her to focus on forging paths and
connections in flood management without financial burden. Through
dedication and interdisciplinary study, Eryn is determined to
demonstrate the impactful contributions smaller university students can
make, aspiring to inspire and lead in environmental conservation.
