The MGWA Foundation is thrilled to have supported the 2023 Seven County Metro Area Children’s Water Festival (https://metrocwf.org/). Approximately 1,900 fourth grade students attended the festival at the Minnesota State Fair grounds on September 27th, 2023. The festival is an interactive, hands-on, educational outreach program for Metro area schools with the goal of educating, motivating, and challenging children to understand, conserve, and protect our water resources. Total cost for putting on this festival is around $35,000, and the Foundation’s commitment of $3,500 brought in more diverse speakers and more underrepresented children by covering the bussing costs. If you’ve attended or helped at one of these festivals, you know how successful the event is at bringing the topic of water alive through the hands-on activities, at helping students understand how we impact water quality, and at highlighting how important water is to everyone. They also offer a virtual festival and have an extensive resources section on their website for classroom activities and projects. The festival is a collaborative effort of the Metro Area Conservation District, an affiliation of state and local government agencies including: all seven Metro Area counties; the Minnesota Departments of Health, Natural Resources, and Pollution Control; Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources; Metropolitan Council Environmental Services; Minnesota Section of Central States Water Environment Association; and local watersheds. Please see their website (https://metrocwf.org/) to get involved or to support the festival next year!
