In 1999 the Minnesota Ground Water Association established the MGWA Foundation, a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, to raise funds as a charitable organization for groundwater education and promotion of public awareness of groundwater in Minnesota and surrounding states and provinces. We can achieve our goals if you, our members, help us in this endeavor.
Two endowed funds (the Gil Gabanski Scholarship Fund and the Hans Olaf Pfannkuch/Alexander Hydrogeology Field Camp Award Fund) are used to support students.
- An endowed fund for student scholarships, now the Gil Gabanski fund was set up in 2000. Careful management has allowed this endowment to grow to over $220,000, which will allow the MGWA Foundation to use about $10,000 each year to support students.
- The Hans Olaf Pfannkuch endowed fund was established in 2010 and is now the Pfannkuch/Alexander Fund. It is designed to bring students with diverse life experiences to a field setting broadening the learning environment for the whole camp. The first two awards were made in 2017, continuing annually. This fund has been managed carefully and is now at $60,000.
- Donations not earmarked for one of these funds are ‘unrestricted’ and are used to support successful MGWA Foundation supported grants. These grants support a broad variety of groundwater-related education and outreach activities, including Childrens water festivals. It is from these funds that we are working to establish support for an initiative being developed by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, which is working towards building a more just and equitable groundwater community.
