In 2020 MGWA held one online conference “Keeping it Clean: Protecting and Managing Groundwater Quality in Urban Environments” (Fall). MGWA took in a total of $32,144.83, most of the income came from membership dues (Figure 1). MGWA had a total of $26,048.33 in expenses, with the largest expense being the administrative costs (Figure 2). This produced a net income of $6,096.50. In 2020 MGWA transferred $10,000 to the Minnesota Ground Water Association Foundation (MGWAF) for use in scholarships and other requested expenses.
In 2021 MGWA held 2 online conferences, “Groundwater Research: What’s New and Useful?” (Spring) and “Rural and Sensitive: Groundwater across the ‘Driftless Area’ of Southeastern Minnesota and Adjacent States” (Fall). MGWA took in a total of $48,835.59, most of the income came from the two conferences (Figure 3). MGWA had a total of $35,117.52 in expenses, with the largest expense being the administrative costs (Figure 4). This produced a net income of $13,718.07. In 2021 MGWA transferred $6,100 to the Minnesota Ground Water Association Foundation (MGWAF) for use in scholarships and other requested expenses. The required federal nonprofit information returns for both 2020 and 2021 were prepared and are available to the public on the MGWA website.
In 2020 MGWA had 5 students, 51 retired, 324 professional, and 34 sustaining members. In 2021 there were 4 students, 58 retired, 336 professional, and 48 sustaining members. Sustaining members pay an extra $20 to provide reduced membership rates for student and retired members. The membership statistics are available on the MGWA website and show that it is largely made up of state and private industry employees, with smaller percentages from city/county employees, academic professionals, and retired.
The MGWAF receives funds from MGWA as well as private donations. The MGWAF Board distributes funds in the form of scholarships to students with a focus on groundwater studies, as grants to educational institutions or events that focus on groundwater. The distribution amounts vary depending on the funds available for distribution and the number of applications received. The MGWAF Board meet quarterly to review the funding requests.
During 2020 MGWAF gave out a total of $5,000 in awards and scholarships (Figure 5) and increased the value of their investment accounts by $23,689.84 through donations and investment results. At the end of 2020 the MGWAF had a total value of $326.194.00 in their accounts (including the unrestricted funds).
During 2021 MGWAF gave out a total of $6,250 in awards and scholarships (Figure 6) and increased the value of their investment accounts by $38,836.52 through donations and investment results. At the end of 2020 the MGWAF had a total value of $347,126.18 in their accounts (including the unrestricted funds).
