50 Years of the Safe Drinking Water Act
November 14th, 2023, 8am – 4:30pm
Heritage Center of Brooklyn Center, MN
Description
Just about ten years ago, the 2014 MGWA Fall Conference looked at the history and future of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund (MGWA 2014 Fall Conference). We are rapidly coming up on the 50th anniversary of another influential and groundbreaking Federal environmental regulation, the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The Safe Drinking Water Act was originally passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public health by regulating the nation’s public drinking water supply. The law was amended in 1986 and again in 1996 and requires many actions to protect drinking water and its sources—rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater. The 2023 MGWA Fall Conference will explore the original foundations of SDWA and how it has evolved over the past fifty years, and what future technical and policy challenges it will need to address. While SDWA was designed to regulate and protect public water supplies, it has influenced technical and policy advances that have had far reaching impacts on groundwater and surface water science and many other related disciplines. The Safe Drinking Water Act applies to both the natural and built environments and brings many professional disciplines together to work towards a common goal – a safe and sustainable public water supply. The Fall Conference will provide a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from both technical experts and planners on how the various aspects of the Safe Drinking Water Act have continued to shape ground water science and policy beyond its defined boundaries. Speakers will address not just how public water supplies are protected, but also how private wells can potentially benefit from work supported by the SDWA.
Details on speakers and registration are on the Conference Web Page.
